There really isn't a "secret" to being successful at blogging. Or if there is, someone sure hasn't shared it with me! We're all just kind of fumbling our ways through it learning, observing and experimenting as we go. Honestly, that's part of the fun of blogging, there's no wrong way to do it, it's your blog, you can do, say, post whatever you want! That being said, there are some definite tips and tricks that will help your blog move along. These are the five things I've found your blog must have. (Or at least I think so, I'm no blog police.)
1. A P I C T U R E O F Y O U
People need to see you, they need to make a connection with who you are and know that you're not a computer. It's almost like when they see your picture and start reading your blog they feel as though they're building a relationship with an actual humanand not just a website. First impressions matter and if you're viewer is met with a smile, they'll respond to your blog a whole lot better. It also goes without saying that having a few sentences about you is very important as well. If you aren't going to have a picture of yourself, you need some writing about yourself.
2. A C O N T A C T P A G E
I can't tell you how many times I've come across blogs that I've wanted to get in contact with but there is no contact information or page to be found. Even Dora the Explorer wouldn't be able to find it, because there simply isn't one. Having a contact page is vital to keeping the conversation going and it basically says that you want to hear from your readers and that you are open to opportunities. What if I was a huge company and had a huge opportunity that I wanted to share with you?! Don't miss out on things just because you didn't have a contact page.
3. N I C E L Y S I Z E D P I C T U R E S
Please, please, please in name of all things blog related, don't have a post section that is 600px wide and images that are 200px wide. This is my absolute biggest pet peeve, and I'll admit, when I started blogging, I was guilty of this too. I think it's a new blogger thing. But I'm here to help! Picture are what makes your blog beautiful (among a whole bunch of other things) and it's so important to fill out the space that is designated for your main post area. If you aren't sure how resize your pictures, there are some great sites like Photobucket or PicResize that can easily help you resize your images. Keep it consistent, and keep it pretty friends.
4. S O C I A L M E D I A
I don't know if you know this but social media is kinda big around the blogging world. Okay, it's like HUGELY POPULAR around here. People want to connect with you on different platforms and in a way that allows them to get to know you better. This is great! It means that you have more opportunity to draw in more readers and get more traffic. So it's very important to have links to your social media sites somewhere on your blog.
5. Y O U R N A M E
This seems like a no-brainer, but it's something I've come across every so often and it drives me up the freaking wall. This coincides a lot with having a picture of you on your sidebar, but if you don't have a name somewhere on your blog then it's almost counter productive. Blogging is so personal and relationship based thing that it doesn't allow readers to make a connection with you. I mean if you met someone in real life for the first (or second time for that matter) would you not tell them your name? Probably not. It doesn't even have to be your full name, heck, you can make up a name for all I care but just put a name down. Please!
If you guys have any questions, I'm always happy to hear them! :) I could talk about blogging for hours on end. XO Lauren
